Cabinetry Hardware Placement

As an interior designer, I know that the beauty of a space often lies in the smallest details.

One detail that can significantly impact both the aesthetics and functionality of kitchen cabinetry, vanities, or custom furniture, is the placement of cabinetry hardware.

Remember that function is first!

The primary role of knobs and pulls is to make the cabinets easy to use. When placing them, consider the natural movement of the hand. For drawers, pulls should be centered both horizontally and vertically to ensure they open smoothly. For doors, knobs should be placed between 2-3 inches from the edge for ease of opening.

Make sure there is an aesthetic balance.

The visual impact of hardware placement cannot be overstated. Symmetry and alignment are most important. For upper cabinets, consider placing pulls or knobs in the lower corners, aligning them with the centerline of lower drawers for a cohesive look. For a modern design, use tab pulls and place them horizontally on both doors and drawers, creating a clean and balanced design.

No hardware at all?

In contemporary design, sometimes the most impactful choice is no hardware. Built-in finger pulls are a sleek alternative that offer both form and function without the need for external hardware. These integrated pulls maintain clean lines and a seamless appearance, perfect for those who love a minimalist aesthetic.

Do what works for your space.

Every space is unique, and sometimes standard placements don’t work. Don’t be afraid to deviate from the norm to meet the specific needs of the space. Whether it’s adjusting for accessibility, doubling up drawer pulls on wider drawers, or experimenting with asymmetrical layouts, customization always elevates the design.

Small details can have a big impact on the overall feel of a space. I always make sure to tape out hardware locations with blue tape before drilling to ensure everything looks balanced. Taking the time to thoughtfully place your cabinetry hardware can transform simple cabinetry into a statement piece.
